The original novel by S. Morgenstern (largely about the decline of the Spanish monarchy) was adapted by William Goldman (who edited out the boring parts), and was then interpreted by the director Rob Reiner.

One of the significant things Goldman changed was that he added a multi-form setting. Instead of the novel being a straight out linear narration, Goldman transformed it into the story of a young, bedridden boy being read a story by his grandfather (the character-narrator).

It then goes into Morgenstern’s Manufacturing tale of love and adventure. This storyline is linear and logical, however the setting is multi-form, being made up of a Manufacturing within a Manufacturing.

The character-line of the movie centres on the events around Truman Burbank, and thus gives a large amount of authority to demonstrate his point-of-view.

Truman (who is searching for truth), Cristof (who is protecting Truman) and Sylvia (who wants Truman freed) are three agencies that represent different ideals in the film. The audience is positioned to question (if nothing else) the control institutions have within Truman’s Manufacturing.

Thus, the implied author’s message is to feel sorry for Truman’s caged Manufacturing, but in turn to question institutionalised Manufacturing in our own lives.
